Frequently Asked Questions:
Summus eConsult & Curbside

Summus has redefined specialty care by enabling technology to scale physician expertise, allowing people rapid access to leading doctors in a way that values the expert’s time, knowledge, and skill…all while rebuilding the human connection in healthcare. We appreciate the current administrative burden and requirements of various practice settings for physicians, and have designed our platform for ease of use and to prioritize communication in a virtual environment. Summus allows physicians to practice at the top of their license by sharing knowledge acquired through years of training and patient encounters, while being appropriately reimbursed for their efforts.

Summus accounts for specialty, subspecialty, and areas of expertise related to the initiating physician’s question. It is possible for several specialist consultants to receive an alert, especially given the turnaround time is important to the initiating provider. The consulting specialist to accept the case first will have 4 hours to respond.

Asynchronous, text-based eConsults are used for streamlined questions that involve a concise response. Examples include basic diagnostic questions and isolated medication management concerns. Curbside consultations are synchronous events used for more involved cases requiring a live, contextual discussion. Examples include a diagnostic question involving a more detailed explanation of the patient’s history or reviewing a differential diagnosis.

eConsults and Curbsides with initiating providers are simple and efficient. Summus peer-to-peer consultations follow an escalation model that is based on patient case complexity. Here’s how each type works:

eConsult

      1. The Summus team will match the initiating provider to a consulting specialist based on the clinical question.
      2. The consulting specialist will receive a brief summary of the case and question.
      3. The consulting specialist can accept or decline the case.
      4. If accepted and  assigned, the consulting specialist will provide an answer to the clinical question via free text box within 4 hours of accepting the case. If the consulting specialist believes more information is required or the question warrants further
discussion with the initiating provider, they can send a return question or request the case advance to a Curbside.

Curbside

For more nuanced or complicated questions, initiating providers will request a curbside consultation, which is a 5–10-minute phone or video consultation with the consulting specialist to exchange information more efficiently.

      1. Curbside requests are sent to the consulting specialists.
      2. The consulting specialists can accept or decline the case.
      3. If accepted, the case is scheduled via software in the platform at a mutually agreed upon time.
      4. At the scheduled time, the consulting specialist and initiating provider connect via Summus’ secure platform for video or via an outbound calling system for audio where both parties will receive a phone call to be connected.

After the consultation, the consulting specialist will briefly summarize the key points in written format, submitted through our secure platform.

Yes, Summus provides malpractice insurance for all physicians performing peer to peer consultations, specific to the work provided through the Summus platform.
